In our feelings.

Data physicalization, generative design

In our feelings. is a set of four 3D puzzles representing the self-reported, remembered emotional journey of four years of marriage. This project embeds emotional data to directly influence the shape and feel of the product and experience.

Developed in Grasshopper and Rhino, the shape, size and texture of each puzzle piece physicalizes a comparison and combination of the self-reported emotional data provided by each partner.

Rhino models of 4 puzzles

3D prints of puzzles in plastic and metal.

Each puzzle represents one calendar year of marriage, beginning and ending at the wedding anniversary date. Each puzzle is made up 5 pieces, representing the time intervals between dates deemed significant to the couple.

The shape, size and texture of each puzzle piece physicalizes a comparison and combination of the self-reported emotions of each partner. Regular equilateral shapes show emotional alignment - partners reporting similar emotions - while irregular shapes show emotional misalignment. Smooth pieces represent good times, while jagged pieces more difficult times.

Reflections + next steps.

The appropriate physicalization of data in products can create opportunities for deep reflection and other experiences for people who interact with them.

I'm in the process of fabricating a physical prototype from a 3D printing service. This will help me test the design and modify accordingly.

To create a playable product, my next steps will be to explore how customers can add on to the puzzle set by sending in monthly/yearly emotional data.

I will further explore how each new puzzle could potentially fit into the previous ones to create an ever expanding puzzle sculpture that represents an emotional lifetime.
